In October the Clifford PTO is focusing on literacy with the Reading and Listening Challenge. Working in partnership with the Clifford Elementary Teaching Staff and Principal, students are encouraged to participate in daily literacy activities including reading books, comics, newspapers and online articles, and listening to music, podcasts or stories.

This year we want to increase student participation. If 75% of the class participates, their teacher will do something fun/crazy. What does participation entail? We want your student to do a literacy activity 20 days out of 31 days. In addition, the student who raises the most money in the class for the fundraiser will get to do something special with his/her teacher. If a large number of students across all grades participate, then Principal Crane will also do something fun as well. Kids can participate whether or not they raise money, mainly we want them to try to focus on literacy activities during October.

Parents we need your help! We would love for kids to see parents and community members reading in class. Want to be a guest reader in the class? Talk to you teacher. Do you know someone in the community that would be great guest reader? Contact Sarah La Torra at sarahlatorra@yahoo.com and we will find a way for them to participate during the month of literacy. Finally, if you are someone who is happier working in the background, we could use your help on other tasks–send me a message and we will find a way for your to participate.

Thank you for supporting the literacy efforts of your students!

Read-a-thon 2017

readathon

The K-5 Read-a-thon kicked off on February 1st and goes through March 2nd! Don’t forget to encourage your kids to read and gather pledges for how many minutes they’ve read in a month. Please ask friends, family members, and neighbors to make a pledge or donation. Every little bit counts!

Thank you for your support in helping make this Read-a-thon a success!

_______________

Tips for Success:

  1. Set a daily reading goal. The Read-a-thon is based on minutes read, which allows students with different reading speeds to compete on a level playing field for recognition.
  2. Pick a quiet, well-lit and comfortable place to read.
  3. Use a clock to ensure accuracy of how many minutes read.
  4. Enjoy!

Read-A-Thon 2016

readathon

The K-5 Read-a-thon kicked off on January 19th and goes through February 16! Don’t forget to encourage your kids to read and gather pledges for how many minutes they’ve read in a month. Please ask friends, family members, and neighbors to make a pledge or donation. Every little bit counts!

Classrooms with the most participating students will win a class party. There will also be prizes for the student who collects the most pledges and for the student who reads the most minutes.

As a bonus the Read-a-Thon works in conjunction with Stanford University’s reading program, Classroom Cardinal. Students are eligible to earn a FREE ticket to the Stanford Women’s Basketball game on February 28.

And there’s more! As an extra incentive, each individual classroom will receive a classroom visit from a Stanford student-athlete just for participating!

This awesome fundraiser promotes literacy, sports, and going to college! Thank you for your support in helping make this Read-a-thon a success!

Please give your kids a final push to read!

This year’s Read-a-Thon ends Friday, Feb 20th. Help your readers earn well-deserved money for their classroom teacher; 50 percent of the fundraising profits will go directly to our kids’ teachers to buy school supplies.

Help your kids fill out their pledge forms and collect their dollars!

Another reminder: The Stanford book marks are also due on Feb 20th. If students read 10 books, they earn a free ticket to a Stanford basketball game on Sunday, March 1st.
