Notes from Coffee with the Superintendent / Apuntes del Café con el Superintendente

7/11 Committee on Surplus Properties

The district hired a consultant develop 7/11 committee. The consultant advised utilizing people from the Superintendent Advisory Council. A few other community members will also be part of the committee. They will give direction about how to use the surplus buildings.

Available locations: Adalante, Orion, Fair Oaks, Hawes and the District Office.

There are three charter schools in the district. By May 1st, the charters need to know where they will be housed. At this time there is a discussion about housing KIPP (645 students, TK-8) and Connect (180 students, K-8) on the Fair Oaks campus. Rocketship (300, TK-5) has offered to pay Fair Market value to rent Orion.

Hawes campus may become the temporary District Office.

The District Office will most likely be rented out. There is talk in the community that this building should be leveled and rebuilt as both a District Office and As teacher housing. There is no funding or plans for this at the moment.

Teacher and Staff Redeployment

Orion and Adalante teachers will be moved as a cohort to their new campuses.

Teachers from Selby Lane, Fair Oaks, John Gill and Hawes selected new sites based on space and seniority. All teachers were placed on Monday last week. None of the Clifford staff were asked to leave!

All non credentialed staff (CSEA union) will select sites based on seniority. This includes office staff, food service staff, Librarians and Custodial staff)

CSEA—all those without a credential. Had to go based on seniority.

Grade Level Configuration:

The survey on grade level configuration will take place after Spring Break. If the feedback is to keep as is, that will be the end of the discussion.

North Star Committee:

A committee will be formed in the fall to discuss the future of North Star.

School Boundaries

In late June, the district will share maps with the public and will seek feedback.

San Carlos School District

SCSD needs to reduce by 2 1/2 million. They may close District Office and move to a school site. The may also raise class size.

Chromebooks

Chromebooks are hiring their 4th year life expectancy. The district will need to seek funding to replace.

In the future, the plan is to send Chromebooks home with middle school students who need it so they can complete work at home. Also need a plan for access to WiFi at home.

This upcoming year Summer School will be funded by Facebook. Future plans to host Summer School online instead of in person. Teachers would check in with students periodically.

Clifford Measure T improvements

Wiring is being replaced in all classrooms, adding power out let’s and improve internet access speed. Each classroom will get a microphone system for teachers to use. Each classroom will receive a TV on a cart that swivels and will be able to plug in around the room as needed. Solar Paneks should be installed in the next few months. Check out the blog for specific details. https://www.rcsdk8.net/Page/8201

Superintendent Baker’s Hope for the Future

-Dream Box access for all campus, online math program that allows students to be supported and move at their own speed through lessons.

-opportunities for all students to learn a second language or at least be introduced

Music for Minors

May be willing to work with each individual school site to determine if they want 12-18 classes per year rather than just the 12 week course we had this year.

The 3 Year Budget will be presented at the School Board meeting in June. Find current budget details here: https://www.rcsdk8.net/Page/81

Additional Parcel Tax

Dr. Baker is reviewing an additional parcel tax with RCEF to help limit the number of kids per classroom particularly in Kinder and 1st. Not confirmed but an option. This was a comment on the climate survey as a concern throughout the District

Other Comments

The District is pursuing having the District switch to a Basic Aid/ Community funded district.

Dr. Baker is pursuing additional teacher training on language arts and social/ emotional learning.

3 kindergartens classes have been confirmed by the District at Clifford and current enrollment for next year is 641. Obviously this is dependent on 2nd rounds and any changes during the summer/ beginning school.
